Andrew Oropeza is a composer based in Los Angeles. He grew up in Exposition Park, listening to film scores and deciphering melodies on the Yamaha electric keyboard his grandfather bought at the swap meet. From Terminator to Adventure Time to Disneyland’s Fantasmic!, he would lose himself in isolating the different instruments, learning how each section contributed to the story.
He met Foshay Learning Center Band Director Vince Womack in 2011, who became an essential teacher and mentor as Andrew learned to read, perform, and eventually compose music. He first studied the flute in middle school before picking up the trumpet to join the high school jazz ensemble. This education prepared him to compose his first piece during the summer of his sophomore year.
In 2016, Andrew joined the inaugural class of Film2Future, a non-profit founded by Rachel Miller that introduces filmmaking to high school students. There, he wrote his first score for the short film “What Runs Through Blood” using stock instruments in GarageBand. He returned for two more summers, writing scores for animation and advertising shorts that deepened his understanding of how music can faithfully represent characters and story.
In summer 2021, Andrew became the Production Coordinator for Film2Future, assisting in virtual animation programming and supporting students in editing, sound design, and music selection.
From 2021 to 2023, he worked with Current Music, assisting with music registrations, metadata, and asset organization.
